Brachytherapy-A Brief Review with focus on Carcinoma Cervix

چکیده

Brachytherapy has been historically described as the first form of conformal technique where radioactive source is placed inside or very close to the tumour. With this modality of radiation a high dose could be delivered to the tumour with maximal sparing of adjacent normal structures. The dose gradient follows the inverse square law which states that the dose falls off sharply with increasing distance from the source. The evolution of this modality started with the use of radium initially, later development of numerous other sealed radioactive sources led to extensive use of this form of therapy in oncology. This has been most efficiently and extensively utilised in the treatment of carcinoma cervix. The earlier concept of point based treatment later changed to the development of volume based treatment.

Evaluation of Volumetric Doses of Organs at Risk in Carcinoma Cervix Patients with HDR Intracavitary Brachytherapy and Comparison of CT-based and Conventional Plans

Background: Brachytherapy treatment planning in cervix carcinoma patients using two dimensional (2D) orthogonal images provides only point dose estimates while CT-based planning provides volumetric dose assessment helping in understanding the correlation between morbidity and the dose to organs at risk (OARs) and treatment volume. Objective: Aim of present study is to compare Internationa...

Study of dosimetric and spatial variations due to applicator positioning during inter-fraction high-dose rate brachytherapy in the treatment of carcinoma of the cervix: A three dimensional dosimetric analysis

Background: This study evaluates dosimetric and spatial variations in inter–fraction applicator positioning in high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy. Materials and Methods: This study includes 25 retrospective patients of carcinoma of the cervix. Each patient received 5 fractions of HDR intracavitary brachytherapy. High Risk-Clinical Target Volume (HR-CTV) were drawn on CT images. First impl...

Brachytherapy in the treatment of cervical cancer: a review

Dramatic advances have been made in brachytherapy for cervical cancer. Radiation treatment planning has evolved from two-dimensional to three-dimensional, incorporating magnetic resonance imaging and/or computed tomography into the treatment paradigm. This allows for better delineation and coverage of the tumor, as well as improved avoidance of surrounding organs. Consequently, advanced brachyt...

Small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix with cerebellar metastasis: A special case report with literature review

Background: Small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix is a highly malignant form of cancer in women, characterized by its high propensity for rapid extra-pelvic distant metastasis and poor prognosis. The best treatment strategy for this type of cancer is still controversial. Case presentation: We report here a case of small cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix treated by extensive total hyster...

Dosimetric Evaluation Study on Conventional and 3d Conformal Brachytherapy Treatment of Cervix Cancer

The purpose of this study was to compare International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU, report 38) reference points, used in conventional brachytherapy planning, with Computed Tomography (CT)-based volumetric calculations of radiation doses for target volumes and organs at risk in biopsy-proven cervix carcinoma patients. All patients underwent brachytherapy using CT-compati...
